How many times have you said to yourself or others, “I would love to be my own boss” and “work morning till night doing what inspires me.” In 2025, 3,566,053 business formation applications were submitted by the end of October, an increase from 2024. However, you must be READY. Although consultants typically do not study for this career, they still need to be prepared and design a plan for success. Consider these tips so that you get started on a pathway to success.
- Clarify your motivation to become a consultant.
- Describe in one paragraph (1-3 sentences) your dream consulting business.
- List your experiences and skills for your desired consulting business.
- Draft a 5-7-year business plan
- Identify consulting pitfalls
Advice I Received
When I started my first consulting business, I was advised to meet with business advisors
from the Small Business Administration. They focused on the business plan—goals, a 5–7-year plan with expected outcomes, funding sources, separate business and personal bank accounts, incorporation, trademarking the business name, getting a website domain name, do’s and don’ts of partners, and more. Today, banks have programs to support new business owners, check into the opportunities locally.
Education Matters
I am leading my second consulting business and have consulted full-time for more than 25 years. Most recent consulting practice (AAG) is 10 years and I have guided other new business owners.
